| In addition to more than 1,000 combined varieties of hostas, daylilies, and lilies, Riverbend Gardens offers astilbe, iris (German, Siberian, & Japanese), ornamental grasses, heuchera (coral bells), hardy flowering cactus (opuntia), sedum, hens & chicks, phlox, water plants, pulsatilla, selected shrubs and trees, and unusual plants like persicarea polymorpha. Many of these plants are not only for sale, but are featured in landscaped beds scattered over the site, giving you the rare opportunity to see the mature plant BEFORE you purchase. We've all been there -- bought a plant, taken it home, and later asked "What was I thinking?" Here at Riverbend Gardens, with our extensive landscaped beds, you get the rare chance to look into your own landscaping future. We offer individual garden tours as time and weather permits, as well as guided tours for bus groups, hort societies, church groups, Red Hat groups, and other groups. If you plan on bringing more than a couple people and would like a tour (tailored to your needs), please call in advance so we can make sure we're available and have some ice tea waiting. In addition, we offer fundraising opportunities for local groups. These programs can take some months to set up, so if you're interested, call us early! We also offer kittens and apples (in season, and depending on the reproductive success of both our resident felines and our orchards), and have an excellent onsite exercise program with our personal trainer -- you pull the weeds and we'll supervise! Come out and see why we were chosen "Howick Township's 150th Anniversary BEST RURAL GARDEN"! |

| Why not plant an EDIBLE shrub this year?!? Lonicera caerulea (Haskap) is a super hardy (Zone 2) fruiting shrub, cultivated for centuries in Russia and Japan (but also native to Canada). Our own Canadian University of Saskatoon has been breeding these for years, and has had outstanding success introducing varieties for both hand-picking and machine cultivation. Unlike a blueberry, Haskaps produce fruit very early in the year, usually before strawberries. Annual yield for a three year old shrub is averaging 5 kilograms -- yup, 12 lbs of fruit per shrub!! They'll grow five feet high and wide, and come in "male" (pollinators) and "female" (producer) varieties. Both types will set fruit, but the "producer" will bear the most berries. We recommend planting one pollinator for up to eight producers -- but try to make sure your producers are adjacent to your pollinator in a clutch instead of in a line. 1 pot for $15.00 / 3 for $40.00 (not seedling plugs) |
