Hostas
Subtle & Lovely
Over 600 varieties
and counting!

Before you read this page, be warned that hostas have been anecdotally proven to contain
addictive substances that render the average gardener senseless for just enough time to empty a
wallet.  These substances assist in hosta propogation by convincing the gardener to travel vast
distances in search of new varieties, indiscriminately spreading the hosta species as they travel.

While this doesn't concern us (our wallets are already empty), it would be unfair if we didn't warn
you before you planted your first Guardian Angel, Sum and Substance, Patriot, or Paul's Glory.

Everyone thinks that they know the hosta.
Everyone is sure of it -- right up until they see a 3
inch high "Dixie Chick", or a four foot high "Sum
and Substance", and then they quickly realize
that the "hosta" is a dynamic plant with as much
genetic range as exists between a Chihuahua
and a Great Dane -- the difference being that a
hosta won't bark, won't bite, won't shed on your
sofa and won't require that you go for a walk at
five a.m. carrying a thin plastic shopping bag
over your right hand.   Take a good look at the
picture on the right for an idea of how diverse
the hosta can be.

Just a few examples of the thousands of named varieties can be found below.  All pictures on our
site were taken at Riverbend Gardens.  A word of warning regarding downloads -- these pictures
have been reduced from their original size, but are still pretty big.  If you are using a dialup service
instead of high speed, downloading may take some time.
Unbeatable blues, yellows, and greens from
