| Lilium Hardy & Gorgeous Over 100 varieties and counting! |
Lilium, or "bulb lilies" (as contrasted with "daylilies") are an incredibly hardy species of plant that thrive in a variety of soil types and growing conditions, and bring spectacular bursts of color to the summer garden. Lily sizes range from tiny Asiatic "Pixies" at 12 inches to massive "Orienpet" hybrid varieties as large as seven feet. They come in a wide range of colors (all shades of white, yellow, orange, pink, and red) and a stunning assortment of bloom variegation and foliage style. Some varieties are bred for fragrance. |

Every bulb will push one stem. Bloom buds appear at the top of each stem, often more than a dozen buds per stem depending on variety. Instead of each bloom lasting one day, each bloom can last up to a week or more. In this way, each stem can provide weeks of colour. |
There are about fifteen different types, all with special strengths and weaknesses. LA Hybrids prefer full sun, have incredibly stout wind-resistant stalks, and incredibly bright, sharp colours. Orientals have wonderful fragrance and prefer dappled shade. Asiatics are strong growers and multiply more quickly than Orientals. Hybrids of these and other types may borrow characteristics from each parent and be ideal for someone else's flowerbed, but not for yours. Come in and tell us what kind of bed you are planting, and we'll point you in the right direction. We carry twelve different types, and over one hundred varieties. |
They can be so subtle as to be hidden treasures (pastel or deep burgundy blooms in a shade garden), or so brash as to overwhelm the eye with explosions of color (ultra-bright yellows and reds in contrasting but complementary mass plantings). |
